September 26 Tuesday – Isabel Lyon’s journal:
Tonight Mr. Clemens read 70 pages of the new story he has been working upon for the last 4 or 5 days. (“A Horse’s Tale”)
A letter from Santa C. [Clara] tells that she had a nasal operation last week, and is weak and tired and discouraged, but she’s better now than she was [MTP TS 102].
Frederick A. Duneka of Harper & Bros. wrote responding to Sam’s letter of “yesterday,” (not extant), in which Clemens suggested supplementing “Eve’s Diary” with a new chapter from “Adam’s Diary ” Duneka was sorry but the Christmas Magazine was already made up; he suggested any new material from “Adam’s Diary” might be an independent feature in a future issue [MTP]. Note: Sam answered ca.Sept. 28 through Lyon that he didn’t think the material would be “very effective published by itself.”
H.H. Rogers wrote from New York to Sam. He planned to go to Fairhaven on Thursday afternoon and then head to Nantucket and wished Sam could go along. He asked him to telegraph the next day. (If Sam replied, it is not extant). “We baptized Harry Rogers, Jr. a week ago last Sunday [Sept. 17] at the Church in Fairhaven. Millicent (Harry’s little girl) ran through the house before the occasion, and told the people that the baby was to be atomized on Sunday” [MTHHR 600].
Ralph W. Ashcroft wrote on Koy-Lo Co. letterhead to Sam.
It seems that some one (I’m not admitting I know who it is) has sent a lampoonic pasquinade to Wheeler’s attorneys, which may cause the author, if they can find him, a lot of trouble. Baldwin tells me that Judge Hornblower has ‘phoned him about it, and that James Byrne (Wheeler’s attorney in that firm) has been to see him about it. Baldwin assured Byrne that he didn’t know anything about it…. [MTP].
Thomas S. Barbour wrote to Sam:
Pardon my failure to acknowledge your favors yesterday. I assure you our Committee would be glad indeed to use your name in connection with the Reform Association in any way approved by you. I judge by your telegram that you think your aid would be even more effective if not formally identified with the society. Perhaps on further consideration, or in the light of further developments, you may be brought to modify this conviction. If so, we will appreciate it greatly if you will let us know [MTP]. Note: he added he was sending a copy of the pamphlet with Sam’s addition.
Thomas S. Barbour also wrote to Sam sometime between Sept. 26 and Jan. 1, 1906. Only the last page survives. He refers to a second edition of 30,000 of the pamphlet, with a changed intro statement
