August 5 Wednesday – Sam called on H.H. Rogers’ office at 26 Broadway and talked William Robertson Coe into visiting Redding with his wife “later in the season.” Later in the day he returned to his Redding home, accompanied by Col. George B. Harvey and David Munro (of the N.A.R.), who stayed over until Aug. 7 [Aug. 6 to Emilie Rogers; IVL TS 56 below].

Isabel Lyon’s journal: Col. Harvey and Mr. Munro came home with the King tonight, and the wise Colonel, after reading an article to us, played billiards with the King and D.M. [Munro] played too, and then the Col. And I curled up on the couch to chat in whispers and he gave me advice for the future comfort and entertainment of the King. We have planned for guests for him as late as late September, the Colonel truly says that the novelty of the place hasn’t worn off yet, and the lonely early winter days are what will make him gloomy. He mentioned Mr. James and Ingles as men good to know and to invite here [MTP: IVL TS 56].
