Isabel Lyon’s journal: “I went to N.Y. on the 8:15. Back on the 1:27 and Zoe Freeman came too. It was torrenting when I went to the station, and the flood gates [sentence unfinished] [MTP: IVL TS 61].

My papa says when he gets rich he is going to buy all of your books. He says he would have been rich long ago if his parents had been brought up in the same locality…. / I saw papa looking at these two pictures and he said he was glad you had made enough to buy you a new suit of clothes, and then he wondered if this very same fellow was still doing your washing. But he wont write so I though I would write and ask you [MTP].

James Longstreet Clemens wrote from Macon, Miss. to disclose his genealogy and to enclose an 1870 clipping from the Macon Beacon containing editorial criticism of America’s humorous writers, the article inspired by Mark Twain. James’ mother was the sister of Confederate General James Longstreet [MTP].
