August 20 Thursday – In Redding, Conn., Isabel Lyon wrote for Sam to Katharine B. Clemens.

Mr. Clemens asks me to thank you for the photograph which he is very glad to have, & also for your note containing the very pleasant news that you will probably be able to spend a Sunday here.

Mr. Clemens is better, & asks me to convey his love to you” [MTP].

Sam’s new guestbook:

Note: Margery was given the “job” at no pay as “Official Plumber”: O.P. None of the above names were in the original guestbook.

Isabel Lyon’s journal:  Mother came back from Farmington. We had a business-library meeting at Mrs. Lounsbury’s.

Marjorie Clinton arrived and Mr. Jervis Langdon came for the day.

I lifted my bronze cat up onto some book shelves, and have a vivid pain in my side [MTP: IVL TS 60-61].

Elin Liljeblom wrote from Wiborg, Finland to ask about a story she described but could not find and did not know the name of [MTP]. Note: IVL: “the Death Disk”

Maud W. Littleton (Mrs. Martin W. Littleton) wrote a postcard from Interlaken, Switzerland to Sam. “Hello—How are you? We are very tired traveling, & I remember that you said you felt sorry for us when we left. We feel sorry too. With love…”[MTP].

Die Zeit sent a form letter to Sam regarding the 80th birthday of Tolstoi on Sept. 10. They were inquiring of “representative personages in the world of Politics, Science and Art” just how Tolstoi had influenced them. They intended to publish the results [MTP]. Note: IVL: “Contract intervened” (meaning Clemens was barred from such submissions by his Harpers contract. Even if not strictly so, he often used it as a reason to decline.
