Isabel Lyon’s journal: “There is a report in the paper today that Santa is engaged [see NY World below]. I brought Katherine in and we worked because it was Labor Day apparently, and the parades were streaming up and down 5th Avenue. Benares telephoned me the Paragraph in the World about Santa. I saw reporters and contradicted that and many things” [MTP: IVL TS 64].

The New York World, p.2, ran the rumor about Clara Clemens and Charles E. Wark (“Will”), her accompaniest:

The engagement of his daughter, Clara, to Mr. Charles E. Wark of this city, has been rumored.

Miss Clemens has been traveling in Europe for some months with a party of friends. In the party is Mr. Wark” [Hill 205]. Note: Hill suggests Clara believed that Isabel Lyon had leaked the rumor, since Clara had written Lyon just over two months prior expressing frustration at not being able to to express “frank expression of the truth.” Wark was a married man.
