September 26 Saturday – At 11 a.m., Jean Clemens sailed for Germany on the Pretoria, accompanied by Anna Sterritt, and Marguerite Schmidt. On the dock waving goodbye were her father, Isabel Lyon and Dorothy Quick. Jean would cable her father on Sept. 30 that she was well and having a comfortable voyage [Sept. 30 to L. Paine; MTOW 179; Hill 213]. Note: MTHL 837n1 erroneously gives Sept. 25 as Jean’s sailing date; Howells’ Oct. 30 refers to the time the two spent in NYC “three weeks ago” [837]. Only one ship sailed from NYC on this date to Germany (Hamburg), the Praetoria [NY Times, Sept. 26, p.7, “Sailing to Europe To- Day”].

Isabel Lyon’s journal:  “Jean, pathetic and wan, sailed at eleven today on the Pretoria, with her Anna and Marguerite Schmitt [sic]. / In the afternoon the King had a box at the Lyceum to see Billie Burke in her new play ‘Love Watches.’” [MTP: IVL TS 66]. Note: a comedy in four acts by Robert De Flers and Gaston Caillavet [Gribben 180].

Sam’s original guestbook contains the following entries for this date (not transcribed into the new guestbook): Meta G. Southmayd, East Orange, N.J.; Meta A. Southmayd, East Orange, N.J.; Julia H. Sanford, Redding Ridge; Imogen Hawthorne Deming, Redding; “X” Hawthorne Deming, His Mark, Redding [Mac Donnell TS 3]. Note: p. 4 was left blank. p.5 continued without a new date for: Adelaide Deming, Litchfield, Conn.; Mary Ashton Wade, Boston [5].

James Ross Clemens wrote from St. Louis to Sam, jesting about the burglary and thanking for “a delightful treat” of his stay at Stormfield [MTP].

Madame Y. Miral wrote from Tunis, N. Africa to ask Sam if “during the past twelve years, gold has been found in the States” [MTP].
