My dear Mr Clemens; – / The photograph inscribed and autographed arrived the other day and I want to tell you how much I value and appreciate it. When I return to my home in Southport it will be placed in my library and of all the photos I have it will take highest rank.

Miss Lyon tells me that you really did like some of the ones I made of you. Well, you see martyrdom has its compensations. You won’t take umbrage I hope when I tell you that I consider the photo I made of you sitting on the lounge in the library the best one I have ever seen of you. (Nothing like speaking up in meeting!) And as for the one in the billiard room, after I have carefully looked at it I am sure it is most pleasing.

In a few days now, I will have the time to make you the postals that you desire…[MTP]. Note: Hyde took photographs of Clemens at Stormfield during this month [MT Journal Spring/Fall 2006 p.19].

Anna Campbell Osband wrote from Flint, Mich. to Sam. “For the memory of he Hon. R.P. Campbell, my fathers favorite brother, I write you. You speak very highly of him in the notes of your splendid book Roughing It. I wish to know if you will give me your autograph” [MTP].

LeGrand O. Robson for Robson Smelting, Buffalo, NY wrote to ask Sam to lecture for the Deleware Club (men of the Deleware Ave. Baptist Church) [MTP]. Note: “Ans. Nov. 20 MLH”

G. Herbert Thring for the Society of Authors wrote to ask Sam if he would do them the honor of allowing his name to be placed on the list of the Council [MTP]. Note: “Ans. Dec. 9 MLH” ; and IVL: “Mr. Clemens consents”

Edward C. Towne for the Oxford Institute of Research wrote to ask Sam if he agreed with the quote about the “drink problem” by Hugo Munsterberg, that, “the only wise reform is by working toward Temperance and not toward Prohibition”  [MTP]. Note: “Ans. Nov. 16 MLH”
