September 2 Sunday – Isabel Lyon’s journal:

Mr. Clemens & I walked down to call on Mr. & Mrs. Joe Smith today. It was a beautiful walk through the Harry Greene wood road & we had a sweet time at the Smiths. Mrs. S. is so beautiful & Mr. is so delightful & their house is enchanting with old Italian things in the big living room & lovely Japanese things in the dining room. Mr. Clemens scratched his Mark Twain on an old blue bench with a pair of scissors & I made a wee ∟↓ a panel or two away on the same blue bench. This morning AB wandered out & after we had chatted awhile the King came down & was in great mood. He sat writing the inscriptions on the series of autobiography ms. [MTP 116-117].
