September 12 Wednesday – Isabel Lyon’s journal: “On the train between Boston & New York somewhere. Mrs. George Harvey & Dorothy are in the 2nd parlor coach ahead. I’ve been in to see them” [MTP TS 119]. Note: judging by this and her Sept. 14 entry, Clemens did not go on this trip, the purpose of which is not stated.

Frederic Chapin wrote from Oak Park, Ill. that he’d rec’d Sam’s Sept. 11 telegram. Chapin had to go ahead with no contract on dramatization of P&P but was secure in Sam’s judgment that Elisabeth Marbury would be fair in her commission [MTP]. Note: The MTP catalogs Lyon’s reply for Sam as “on or after 12 Sept.” Three days estimated postal time is allowed here, putting the reply at ca. Sept. 15.

Joe Twichell wrote to Sam, letter not extant but referred to in Joe’s Sept. 14 [MTP].

Mary B. Rogers (Mrs. H.H. Rogers, Jr.) wrote from Fairhaven, Mass. to Sam.

Dear Uncle Mark—/ Father Rogers has asked me to return your scurrilous literature, and to say, that as for him, he will have nothing to do with persons who indulge in anonymous post cards, however much he might feel himself in sympathy with their sentiments.

He hopes that having enjoyed yourself, by taking away your own character, so openly you are ready to suffer the penalty—with meekness, which the law inflicts on those who are caught sending opprobrious remarks through the mail— Only an autodactyl Hellenist—would behave so rudely— / Your most affectionate niece Mary” [MTP].
