December 30 Sunday – Isabel Lyon’s journal:

The King was so distressed when I went to him this morning with the news that C.C. had given up all the program for tomorrow eve. I have never seen him so serious—so disappointed. I went to her with the news & she telephoned to George Gilder & to Miss Burbank who were to have helped out, & tonight with Witter Bynner they made out a good act for the charade “Champagne” which we acted at the Pumpelly’s last summer. At dinner tonight, Mr. Clemens was telling how at an Edwin Booth Memorial Meeting he sat near Mr. Gilder, & when Gilder asked him if he didn’t think it was a good meeting, Mr. Clemens said “all but the damn poem they read” & he elaborated on the frailties of the verses, while Mr. Gilder nudged him & shifted his chair Mr. Clemens who still kept on until Mr. Gilder whispered to him that the poet was within earshot & hearing all that was said.

Dr. Quintard was here today & the summer Bermuda trip is given up [MTP TS 155-156].
