July 6 Monday – In Redding, Conn. Sam wrote to Collier’s Weekly.

Hon. Collier Weekly which furnish Japanese Schoolboy to public not often enough, when is his book coming out? I shall be obliged if you will send me the earliest copy, or at least the next earliest. That Boy is the dearest & sweetest & frankest & wisest & funniest & delightfulest & lovablest creation that has been added to our literature for a long time. I think he is a permanency, & I hope so, too. / Truly yours [MTP]. Note: see Mar. 8, 1909 to Wallace Irwin (1875-1959; pseud. “Hashimoto Togo”), author of Letters of a Japanese Schoolboy, which first ran in Collier’s Weekly in installments (1908-1909) and later became a book. See Gribben 154, 347.

Ralph W. Ashcroft wrote for Sam to James A. Renwick, owner of 21 Fifth Ave. NYC.

Mr Clemens directs me to inform you that he does not expect to be able to renew the lease of the house, no 21 Fifth avenue for another year but that he would like to retain his tenantcy of it after Sept. 30th next, by the month or by the quarter.

When Miss Clemens returns from Europe in the late autumn, Mr Clemens will be able to decide whether he will need the house for a further period, but in the meantime, he would like to know that it is agreeable to you that he shall return it subject to a month’s or a quarter’s notice by either party, as you may elect [MTP]. Note: Isabel Lyon revised this draft, which is in the file for the Renwick to MT of 7 July.

Clemens A.D. for this day is listed by MTP.
