Note, Dec. 28. After a day or two of thought upon the matter, I yielded to Margery’s wish for a “job,” & appointed her Official Plumber of the house—without salary. She pays us a visit whenever she can (she promised this), but if ever she plumbs [illegible word], I . . . . .well, I don’t believe she ever does. In fact sometimes I doubt if she knows how to plumb. But she’s a good child & means well

[Sam wrote Margery on July 22 that her “going silenced a most pleasant note in the melody of this house’s atmosphere,” so his question mark in the date column likely reflects his faulty memory, since by July 22 she had left; if she stayed a week it would have been ca. July 16-22]

In Redding, Conn. Sam wrote to Clara Clemens in London, England.  

Clara dear, the enclosed, from an Italian paper, was forwarded to me by our consul at Palermo.

He did the red-penciling himself.

George Robinson came up & spent a day & a night here, & told us all about you & was therefore inexhaustibly interesting. He  is  fine and  lovable. I hope to see more of him.

I  do so delight in this home that the thought of ever going back to that crude & tasteless New York barn, even to stay over night, revolts me. I do not wish to live anywhere but here.

I have written Mrs. MacMillan a letter of hearty thanks.
