John B. Stanchfield wrote from NYC to Sam, feeling that addressing Clemens as “Doctor” did not sound natural.

my errand in writing was not to comment on your various titles that your ability and fame have won for you, but to say that immediately following our visit at your home [see Aug. 14- 15], I am intending with my touring car to run up into the White Mountains, across to Poland Springs, down to Boston, then back home. I have a very comfortable car, the trip leads us each day to first-class hotels where we will have good sleeping accommodations and be otherwise well cared for, and covers about seven days. It is the finest automobile trip in this country and August is the ideal time to take it. I have plenty of room for you and would be charmed to have the pleasure of your company. Does the prospect stir your pulses sufficiently to make you want to go? …it would give us an opportunity to discuss Butters, Plasmon and hair pins to our hearts’ content. … [MTP]. Note: Henry A. Butters.
