August 10 Thursday – Sam left Dublin for Boston and Norfolk, Conn. to visit daughter Clara. F. Kaplan adds he stopped over in Hartford. No further record of the stop was found [622].

Isabel Lyon’s journal:

Mr. Clemens went away today. Norfolk, Conn, to see Clara. It is hot and I have just discovered that the train between here and Boston stops at ever so many stations, or I’m afraid it does, and Mr. Clemens dreads, hates and remembers with horror a railway journey.

I went down to Col. Higginson’s this afternoon and he gave me a long and delightful talk. Miss Bright of the Wanamaker Book News, in her letter to Col. Higginson wants particularly sketches of Mr. Churchill and Mr. Norman Hapgood and they are Cornish people. Mr. Hapgood isn’t there this season. Col. Higginson called my attention to some lovely glass and a beautiful Chinese vase. They are wedding gifts for his daughter who is to be married to Dr. Barney on the 2nd of September. … [MTP TS 84]. Note: James Dellinger Barney.

Ralph W. Ashcroft wrote on Koy-Lo Co. letterhead to Sam.

I think you had better send me a check for $634.59 on account of Plasmon expenditures to date, and I will then pay Baldwin the $202.76 that we still owe him. It may be three or four months before we can get hold of the $2700. of Plasmon money that is tied up in the bank, but just as soon as we do, I will refund you the money you are contributing.

As things stand now, the Plasmon Company is not bankrupt, and we are the legal officers of the Company, despite the fact that Hammond actually owns a majority of the stock. It is very funny. The tail of the Plasmon dog seems to be in a more healthy and satisfactory condition than the dog itself [MTP].
