August 16 Wednesday – In Norfolk, Conn. Sam wrote to Isabel V. Lyon.

I go to Fairhaven to-morrow for a day or two. Please look at Kipling’s account of his visit to me at Susy Crane’s farm, & see if Mrs. Clemens as well as Susy Clemens was present. Mrs. Laura M. Dake has not yet written. Suppose you telephone the bank & ask if that check has been collected.

My mind is dreadfully sluggish this last two days & dictating goes hard. I’m glad to knock off & have a holiday. With lots of love to Clärchen, … [MTP]. Note: Laura Wright Dake, Sam’s old sweetheart from 1858 would write several times in 1906 and 1907. It appears Sam did not go to Fairhaven the next day.

Isabel Lyon’s journal: I received a little note from Mr. Clemens [written Aug. 15]. His gout was sharp when he wrote, and he’s in his bed.

Evenings Jena is reading aloud “La Jeunesse de l’ Imperatrince Josephine.” Jean reads very well. Her talent for languages is remarkable, and her accent is sweet and satisfying. It transports you to France, if she is reading French, to Italy if she is reading Italian, and to Germany if she is reading German [MTP TS 89].
